The 4 Guiding Principles of ChatGPT

Note from Larissa for Donna... AI is becoming increasingly prevalent as the global community becomes more automated and digitally connected. It’s important for us as business owners to learn and adapt to this exciting technological advancement. If we are diligent in adopting new practices today, we will have the systems and skills in place to take full advantage of AI in the future. To help with that, I believe learning how to use ChatGPT is a good first step into learning.

ChatGPT has been making headlines across the globe for two reasons: First, it is the first AI to replicate human speech with demonstrable accuracy. Second, the ease of use of ChatGPT’s interface allows anyone to use it regardless of proficiency. While many reporters are quick to politicize AI, I believe there needs to be more effort put into teaching people how to use ChatGPT to achieve their goals.

In my opinion, the replies that ChatGPT generates to user prompts are around 40% accurate. Because the AI isn’t a human being, it lacks the creativity and nuance that certain prompts demand. However, it makes up for that lack of accuracy through sheer speed. I generated 14 ChatGPT replies about a range of topics and received around 1400 words in five minutes. How, then, can we best take advantage of what ChatGPT has to offer? Here are four guiding principles for what to use this AI for:

  1. Quick Prompting - ChatGPT requires a prompt to function. A good rule of thumb is if you aren’t able to be specific with your prompt, then it’s probably not something ChatGPT is capable of.

  2. A Repetitive, Well-Documented Task - ChatGPT does the mundane so we can create the revolutionary. Any task that is streamlined to be accessible (list-icles, legal documents, basic coding, etc.) can be easily created by ChatGPT.

  3. No Creativity Required - The algorithm simply can’t create something new, and will struggle to write responses to prompts that require it to pull data from a small data-set. Grey’s Anatomy scripts are a large data set ChatGPT can pull from, 2009’s Flashforward scripts are significantly smaller.

  4. Low Priority Tasks - Given the flaws that come with ChatGPT, it’s best to use it to create a bandaid or an outline for a task that can be edited later by a human.

If we use those guiding principles, we can find a lot of success using ChatGPT. However, that isn’t to say that ChatGPT is completely unusable if you break some of those rules. Below is a ChatGPT-generated response to a prompt that demands ChatGPT be creative. To demonstrate its accuracy, any text that is italicized is something that a human would have to edit.

Prompt: Create an administrative job listing in a hypothetical future where AI does the majority of menial labor and humans need not apply.

As you can see, the response is rough, and definitely needs editing. However, it’s definitely not unusable, and we can use the response as an outline to help us create a job listing that is more accurate. Additionally, we can use the 4 guiding principles to fix the errors in our prompt and generate a better response if needed. The point is that ChatGPT can be used to bypass a lot of menial labor done by our employees. As the first of its kind, ChatGPT will doubtless receive many improvements that will make it easier and better to use. However, if we invest time into learning how to best use AIs like this, we can absolutely streamline a large amount of workflow.
